Alfred Wainwright was born on 17 January 1907 in Lancashire, England. He came from an impoverished background and left school at 13 to become an office boy. He worked hard and studied t become an accountant at night school. In 1930 he took his first holiday, he and his cousin went to the Lake District. The effect was magical and would see him return at every opportunity. He even took a pay cut when a job vacancy became available in Kendal. His first book was locally published in 1955 to immediate success and a loyal following eagerly awaited each subsequent book. His work stands alone, unsurpassed in his field and is highly collectable today with first editions in dust jacket being particularly sought after.
