Alan Garner
was born on 17th October 1934 in Cheshire, England. After doing his National
Service he read classics at Magdalen College Oxford. After leaving he worked
several minor jobs in order to support himself whilst writing his first novel
which, despite Alan Garner's own dissatisfaction, a success with both critics
and readers. He is best known for The Stone Book Quartet and Red Shift, all of
which are now collectors items in first edition status. The early books are the
most valuable and sought after. The UK editions precede the American and are
also more desirable to collectors so, consequently, more valuable.
