Alan Bennett was born on 9th May 1934 in Leeds , England and came
from a working class background. At eighteen did his National Service before
going on to college in Oxford. He wrote plays and sketches and took part in the
legendary Beyond the Fringe with Peter Cook and Jonathan Miller. He has enjoyed
continual success and critical success both for his stage work and television
adaptations. The first two hardcover books are the scarcest.
