AE Houseman was born on 26th March 1859 in Worcestershire,
England. He was educated at St John's College Oxford though left without a
degree after failing a crucial exam due to personal problems. He went to work at
the patent office before becoming a Professor of Latin. He is remembered today
chiefly for A Shropshire Lad which was published in 1896 at the authors
own expense. It is a rare, only 500 copies were produced, and sought after book.
